Lake Mburo National Park

 

Southwest Uganda is home to the 370 square kilometer Lake Mburo National Park. It is mostly in the Kiruhura district, although it is also spread throughout three other districts: Mbarara, Isingiro, and Kiruhura. Many wild species can be found in the public spaces that surround Lake Mburo National Park, adding to the diverse array of wildlife found there.

The climate of the Lake Mburo National Park area is semi-arid savannah, with minimum rainfall of 400 mm in the southeast and 700 mm in the west. The Park and its environs are drier than those of the surrounding areas because of the rain shadow cast by the Kabula Hills. Rainfall occurs in two distinct seasons, primarily from March to May and from September to November.

Lake Mburo boat cruise

From a jetty at the lakeside campsite next to Rwonyo Rest Camp, boats can be used to explore the eastern beaches of Lake Mburo. Keep an eye out for hippos and crocodiles throughout the two-hour ride. A wide range of birds can also be seen, such as fish eagles, pelicans, herons, and maybe the uncommon shoebill and finfoot. By arrangement, fishermen with their gear are allowed to fish the lake from the campsite.

 

Game drives

Early morning and late afternoon game drives are available in Lake Mburo National Park. You can encounter several game tracks, like the zebra and Kazuma tracks, among others, on these game drives, which are the best kind of activities. You may witness a wide range of wildlife species on these trails, including zebras, bushbucks, oribi, giraffes, buffaloes, bush duikers, and reedbucks, as well as a variety of bird species, including kingfishers, herons, marabou storks, and black-bellied bustards, among others. network of game tracks explores the eastern hinterland of Lake Mburo, providing the chance to see a variety of savannah animals and birds.

This activity is carried out in the different areas of the park including the Rubanga forest, in swampy valleys, among others, bird watching can also be done during the boat cruise, nature walks, and games drives where you will be in a position to spot a variety of bird species such the pied kingfishers, saddle billed stork, blue-headed coucal, breasted kingfisher.

 

Night drives

Night drives with a ranger guide provide the chance to see nocturnal animals such as bushbabies, pottos, and perhaps even a leopard.

 

Salt Lick Walks 

Guided walks explore the park around Rwonyo, culminating in a visit to a natural Salt Lake where wildlife can be viewed from a timber observation platform.
